This year the weather trends show that extreme weather conditions are on the rise – the northern parts of US have seen freezing temperatures during this winter on the other hand parts of Australia are suffering from intense heat waves not experienced in the past. Similarly, in India the extreme weather patterns are changing drastically, impacting the monsoons, rainfall, increasing droughts and temperature rise across the country in summers and low temperatures being experienced in winters. Weather extremes in 2018 included wildfires in California and Greece, drought in South Africa and floods in Kerala.
Collaborative efforts of international climate scientists and agencies have brought out detailed reports about the causes and impacts of climate change on the earth system. The Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) reports on this issue indicate the changing patterns and impacts on earth system, humans and all forms of life on the planet. Last five years were the warmest on record and the outlook is for more sizzling heat, approaching levels that most governments view as dangerous for the Earth, due to record levels of man-made greenhouse gas emissions, mainly from burning fossil fuels. IPCC’s report gives us a window of 10-12 years for taking climate action after which we will enter a phase of irreversible planetary destruction.
Such reports, meetings, discussions are a regular feature all around the world since the 1992 Rio Earth Summit in Brazil, including the much talked about Paris conference on climate change in 2015. However, these meetings are limited to the participation and discussion by the economic and political elite and experts, barring the most affected communities. As the climate crisis continues to deepen the need to engage with the fundamental issues is becoming immediate. It is crucial to understand the urgency of the issue as it impacts all human life and the planet at large.
The workshop on climate change would look into some of these aspects. Along with film screenings on climate change during the workshop, resource persons who have studied climate change aspects closely would discuss the primary causes, technical points and impacts of climate change. It would also discuss the role of major economies like US, China, India and international politics in dealing with climate issues, the alternative models, technologies, systems that could be used to mitigate and adapt to the climate change conditions. The workshop will be organised at Gandhi Bhawan, Bhopal on 16-17th March 2019.
