A Global Plastics Treaty is being negotiated under the aegis of the UNEP. This is an outcome of the advocacy with the United Nations Environment Assembly by several civil society organisations globally since 2017. There are to be 4 rounds of negotiations of the Intergovernmental Negotiating Committee (INCs) and then a final INC where member states will sign the treaty that is negotiated. CFA has been involved in this process since the Intergovernmental Negotiating Committee (INC) 1 which was held in 2022 from November 18 ā€“ December 2 in Uruguay. During the proceedings, CFA had the opportunity to make a written submission. You can hear the submission in the video below.

You can also read the submission here.

As preparation for INC 2, the member states had requested that the Secretariat prepare a document with potential options for elements including the objective, substantive provisions including core obligations, control measures and voluntary approaches, implementation measures and means of implementation. Submissions from observers and member states were invited, which would inform the draft that the Secretariat would prepare. Here you can access CFA’s submission.
