As the world prepares for the next round of Global Plastics Treaty negotiations at the United Nations (INC-5 in Geneva, August 2025), we have been amplifying grassroots voices from pollution-impacted communities.
Youth Voices from the Frontlines
Chennai Climate Action Group (CCAG) and CFA organised a dedicated session with children from communities living near petrochemical industries and one of the largest landfills in Chennai. These young participants raised powerful demands for a health-centred plastics treaty, calling for an end to plastic production that continues to choke their environment and health.
Plastics Toxic Tour
A Plastics Tour was conducted through the industrial and waste dumping zones of North Chennai by Chennai Climate Action Group. Chythenyen from the Centre for Financial Accountability also accompanied them and participants, mostly children, who witnessed first-hand the impacts of plastic production and disposal — from factory emissions to polluted canals and shorelines — and reflected on the systemic nature of the plastic crisis.
Webinar on Global Plastics Treaty
An online public discussion titled “Global Plastics Treaty: A People’s Perspective” was organised on July 26, 2025, featuring environmental activist Geo Damin of Poovulagin Nanbargal and Dr. Vishvaja. The session helped demystify the treaty process and encouraged citizen engagement.
Additionally, a special briefing was held for members of Tambaram Makkal Kuzhu by CFA to deepen local understanding and advocacy around the treaty.
