About Dr. Marjorie Fernandes
Marjorie Fernandes was a Professor of Economics at Janki Devi Memorial College, University of Delhi, where she taught for over four decades. An alumna of Miranda House and the Delhi School of Economics, she was also part of Jawaharlal Nehru University’s first batch in 1971–72 and later pursued study leave at University of Sussex, UK.
Throughout her career, she remained deeply committed to student welfare and women’s empowerment. Reflecting on how access to safe accommodation transformed her own early career, she later donated generously to the University of Delhi Endowment Fund to support safe housing for women facing adversity.
Her legacy continues through the Marjorie Fernandes Scholarship at Janki Devi Memorial College, awarded annually to the best all-round student of B.A. (Hons.) Economics across all three years, recognizing both academic excellence and holistic development.
