Felicitation Ceremony and Public Lecture

Felicitation of Com. Thomas Franco, Former Gen. Sec AIBOC and Com. Soumya Datta, Gen. Sec AIBOC.

In recognition of the historic contribution of Com. Franco, in leading AIBOC at a time when the Public Sector Banks were facing a huge crisis. His tenure saw the Banking Officers’ Union reaching out to civil society and other trade unions in forming a united front against the attack on Public Sector Institutions. Initiatives like the People’s Parliament and Save Public Sector were need of the hour against Privatisation.

Com. Soumya Datta, has been an active member of the trade union for the last 28 years. His involvement in the union started even during his student days as a part of Students Federation of India. As the General Secretary, State Bank Officers’ Confederation, Bengal Circle, he has actively strived to reach out to the poor and rural areas. At a time when the Public Sector Banks are in a fight for survival, his people-oriented leadership is a much-needed one.

The felicitation would be followed by a lecture on “Crisis in Public Sector Banks and Importance of Bank Unions” by Prof C P Chandrasekhar (Centre for Economic Studies and Planning, JNU). Prof. Chandrasekhar has been one of the key voices from academia against the neo-liberal policies over the past two decades and is also the author of The Market that Failed: Neo-Liberal Economic Reforms in India.
