The recent round of protests against the Luhri Hydro Electric project in Himachal Pradesh yet again illustrate all that is wrong with pushing hydropower dams in the Himalayas. This comes close on the heels of the Joshimath land subsidence, the tunnel collapse trapping workers in Uttarkashi, and Teesta stage 3 dam collapse last year. The Himalayas, home to unique biodiversity and ecosystems, are particularly badly hit by large-scale infrastructure development. There is a need for greater transparency and accountability of the financiers and the contractors of huge development projects here, but what we are witnessing is sheer recklessness.
