At a Press Conference held in Delhi, organised by Delhi Solidarity Group, fisherfolk from Uttara Kannada district of Karnataka shared how they the massive port construction spree under the Sagarmala push threatens their fishing grounds, and may prove ‘genocidal’ for their livelihoods and way of life.

The Sagarmala initiative, a pet project of government bankrolled on public money, – from Vadhavan, to Honnavara, to Vizhinjam to Great Nicobar – is threatening to become a pattern of port infrastructure development where coastal communities, adivasis, environmental safeguards, and long term sustainability are at the risk of being sidelined for short term industrial gains.
